Scripture:
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind drives away.” —Psalm 1:1-4 (NKJV)
Reflection:
Psalm 1 beautifully describes the life of someone who meditates on God’s Word. This person chooses not to follow the ways of the ungodly, avoiding influences that draw them away from God. Instead, they find joy and purpose in the “law of the Lord” and make it their daily focus. Meditating on Scripture day and night means continually thinking about God’s truth, letting it shape our thoughts, decisions, and actions.
The psalmist uses the image of a tree planted by rivers of water to show the stability and strength that comes from meditating on God’s Word. Just as a tree draws life and nourishment from a constant water source, we are nourished and strengthened by God’s Word when we meditate on it regularly. This deep-rooted faith allows us to stand firm and flourish, even when life’s challenges arise.
Unlike those who rely on fleeting worldly wisdom, those who meditate on God’s Word are fruitful, vibrant, and secure. They grow in wisdom and discernment, bearing fruit in the right season. In contrast, the ungodly are compared to chaff—light, rootless, and easily blown away. When we fill our hearts and minds with God’s Word, we remain anchored and purposeful, reflecting His love and character in all we do.
Prayer:
Lord,
Thank You for Your Word that strengthens and guides me. Help me to meditate on it daily, drawing wisdom and strength from Your truth. Let my life be like a tree planted by the waters, bearing fruit that reflects Your love and grace.
Amen.
